FCT, Abuja - The acting executive secretary of the National Universities Commission(NUC), Chris J Maiyaki, has disclosed the number of open universities that have been approved to operate in Nigeria.
Maiyaki said out of the 260 approved universities in Nigeria, five are open universities.
In a report published on the NUC website, Maiyaki said the federal government owned one of the five open universities in the country
He stated this during the visit of the President and Principal of King’s College London, Proffer Shitij Kapur
Five open universities currently operating in the Nigerian university system are:

1. The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), which has 72 study/resource centres nationwide

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu, said the school would accept all guidelines of the Nigeria Law School and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
It should be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari recently signed the bill that allows NOUN to be equal with other universities and could participate in the compulsory one-year national service and law school.
Legit.ng also reported that the National Universities Commission (NUC) urged proprietors of private universities not to expect financial rewards for establishing tertiary institutions in the country.

The executive secretary of NUC, Prof Abubakar Rasheed, stated this while presenting provisional licenses to 37 newly approved private universities.
The National Universities Commission (NUC) inaugurated a committee in 2021 to create a new core curriculum and minimum academic standards for universities.
The committee constituted experts from various disciplines in Nigerian universities.
Professor Abubakar Rasheed, the executive secretary of the NUC, disclosed that the new core curriculum and minimum academic standards came into existence after a thorough review of the benchmark minimum academic standards that Nigerian universities are using.
